By the time 1980 came around video rental shops hit the scene and I just moved to England again.
Shortly after arriving I got myself a VHS player and hit the rental shops.
The first time felt like it was Christmas and my birthday all in one.
Within a few weeks I had two machines and making my own death scene reels.
The very first titles I rented was “Vampires” (it just been recently released) and “Jessie’s Girls”.
Of course soon after I quickly turned into a video rental hunter/junkie.
It was great fun for some time going into the rental places, looking at the different titles, box art,
descriptions and to try to decide to rent or not that it might have a good death scene.
The best one’s were where I rented a video just because I wanted to watch something entertaining and
it would unknowingly have a knock your socks off death scene.
A good example of this was “Once Upon a Time in America”, with its great shooting in the beginning.
When I got back to the states in 87, I had to start all over again knowing my PAL tapes would not work on NTSC .
Yeah, I know I could of gotten a dual recorder, it was fun to start all over again anyway.
By then a lot of shops had used videos for sale, and I quickly acquired a video library.
A lot of the oversize video boxes and clam-shells had a lot of your great bloody horror flicks.
The best all around used video rental I ever bought was “Satan’s Blade” and I think it still is a death scene classic today.
By the end of the 80’s I thought I was on the top of the hill... how could things get even better from here?
Boy was I wrong!!!... which will bring me to my next chapter... the 90’s.
