Bizarre Battles Computer Game - major update 9/21

Post by Jason »

Hello all. Because of the mass exodus from the DS board, I wanted to take a moment to announce to a possibly different audience the release of "Bizarre Battles version 0.80" - a major update of my computer wargame of woman-to-woman combat.

Get it here - link good until about 10/5:

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

[1] Memory Management
- ADDED new "graphics load" button [Image #1, "A"]
After yet another major re-write, this represents my last, best effort to make the game accessible to as many computers as possible.

This button permits a trade-off: At "Level 0," a bare-minimum of graphics are pre-loaded, which will make the game more accessible to systems with limited RAM. The down-side is that graphics not pre-loaded are loaded as needed, so you may see a lot of disk access, which will slow down game play, perhaps considerably. At the upper extreme, "Level 6," everything is pre-loaded so the game will run much more quickly with a minimum of disk access. Ideally, run the game with the highest graphic load you can, until graphics (especially hands and weapons) start "disappearing," then reduce the load and try again.

This is really the best I can do with respect to memory-management. If it still doesn't work satisfactorily, then consider a computer upgrade.

[2] Interface Issues
- FIXED crash when using mouse wheel on Team Builder screen.
- ADDED "immediate save" of Favorites and Blacklist (that is, no need to start game to get this data to save).
- FIXED Blacklist function and and Dossier Images for all women.
- DELETED "restart" button. This is to preserve memory by forcing a clean restart between games.
- CHANGED "show flags" hotkey from "F" to "O" ("show objectives").
- CHANGED "default aim point" hotkey from "A" to "B" ("body part").
- ADDED hotkeys for "rape her" ("R") and "fondle breasts" ("F").
- ADDED "reverse sort" to Team Builder sort buttons. Click once for low-to-high; click again for high-to-low.

[3] Weapons/Clothing/Hair
- ADDED melee weapons (knife, sword, spear), bow and shield, plus appropriate animations and effects.
- ADDED cowgirl-style weapons (Colt 45 pistol and Winchester rifle).
- ADDED cowgirl-style clothing (boots and 2 tie-tops).
- ADDED new clothing category "full inner" and selected clothing (leotards). [Image #2, "D"]
- ADDED new clothing category "full outer" and selected clothing (strapless dresses).
- ADDED new clothing category "headgear" and selected clothing (western hat, indian headband).
- ADDED new clothing category "earrings" and selected clothing (pearl earrings).
- ADDED new clothing category "belt" and selected clothing (western gunbelt).
- ADDED new clothing categories "ammo clips," "backpack/purse," "arms," and "legs." No matching clothing items yet.
- ADDED many new hairstyles, including "bald."

[4] New Battles
- ADDED selectable page views. [Image #1, "B"] This feature will permit the addition of lots of new battles over time.

- ADDED EIGHT new battles (Nos. 9-16), all featuring natives and native weapons (often against modern weapons  ).

Among these, the two "ambush" battles (Wagon Train and Village Raid) use a modified AI that causes most of the defenders to be "frozen" for a couple of turns before they start fighting back.

- MODIFIED "start position" routines to allow "switched" start locations and/or first move in suitable battles. This is determined randomly for suitable battles. (Eventually the player will have more control over this aspect of battle design.)

[5] Combat
- ADDED "aim" feature ("A") [Image #3, "G"]
and target acquisition.

First you need to "target" a woman as before (place the cursor over her location and right-click, which will show a red highlight box). Then press "A" to expend AP to increase aim against that woman, to a maximum aim of 5. Aim is also acquired automatically every time you actually shoot at that woman, to a maximum of 3. Aim is lost at the end of turn; that is, aim does not carry over from turn to turn.

- ADJUSTED weapon accuracy to reflect initiative of attacker and defender.

No longer do all women fight equally. Now, higher-initiative women (who are presumably smarter and more likely to be useful) fight better and are slightly harder to hit. Conversely, low-initiative women fight less effectively and are more likely to end up as bullet-stoppers.

- ADJUSTED firing arcs to make it easier to shoot from behind windows and doors.

Formerly, shooting from behind a window was not terribly effective, because the window frame tended to block a lot of the shots. This has been adjusted and is now a lot less likely in the new version.

[6] Bells and Whistles
- MODIFIED game structure to speed up movement.
- ADDED additional "splash screen" art (about 100 new images), including great new images by "Suleyman." [Image #1, "C"]
- ADDED additional "scream" sound effects
- ADDED secondary characteristics (occupation, personality, morality, sexuality) [Image #2, "E"], with switchable page views during the battle. [Image #3, "I"]. No in-game impact as yet.
- ADDED button to visually highlight all kills by selected woman. [Image #3, "H"]
- ADDED button to filter visibility of dead combatants. [Image #3, "F"]

UPGRADE NOTES
As before, you can transfer your old "custom women" by copying the contents of the "Women" folder in your older game to the "Women" file in the new game.

However, because several new clothing categories have been added, existing team-save files will probably not work properly, so you will have to start over with your teams.

SHAMELESS REQUEST FOR DONATIONS
As you can imagine, this update has been the product of at least a couple hundred hours of hard work. While several of you have generously donated to date, anyone out there who is appreciative of the work so far, and/or wants to encourage future development of the game, may want to consider a donation. Please email to bizarrebattles@hotmail.com for details.

I look forward to feedback on this major update. If there are any serious game-stopping issues that my playtesting did not identify, I will attempt a quick-fix update as soon as possible, but it's up to you to let me know.

More to come.

My apologies - the download link specified above was removed much earlier than expected. Fortunately, a new Mediafire account seems to be working for now. Try this..
