"Anyone we know of?" Relating to a character

The quote is from a Marvel What-The? X-Men parody. 50 mutants and 5 redshirts (or something like that) have been killed in a cheap sales ploy. X-Men leader: "Anyone we know of?" "Nope."
I just read the "Vampiverse" arc: An evil Vampirella from another dimension kills off a buttload
of good alternate Vampirellas from still other dimensions. Which were strictly copy&paste: a pirate Vampirella, a stone age Vampirella, a spaceship Vampirella, a mermaid Vampirella...zero characterization beyond the "a x$ Vampirella". No intercourses were given.
Must you relate to a character such that her death means anything to you? Or can it be a random redshirt?
