Review of “A Promising Young Woman” (Spoilers}

A Promising Young Woman

We saw “Promising Young Woman” tonight. We passed on Wonder Woman and all it’s video game cut screen cgi nonsense and went for the flick by the makers of “Killing Eve”, because we knew it would be funny and sinister, if nothing else. I could not bring myself to recommend it for a SAG award, but I came away thinking some members of the community might really enjoy the twisted storyline and the climax of the film, which I am about to spoil if you read on.

SPOILER ALERT
The super cute lead in the movie is murdered with about 15 minutes left. The role of Cassie is portrayed by Carey Mulligan, who I realized reminded me of a young Linda Ronstadt with blond hair. Cassie’s best friend Nina was raped by a group of preppy med students years before, eventually committing suicide after the fallout. Cassie goes on a campaign to blackmail everyone involved by luring them into sexual liaisons. For a while I found this annoying, because she never seemed to do much with the info but shame them. However she had bigger plans for the guy who actually committed the crime and cunningly used these situations to leverage herself into position to get the rapist himself. He was about to get married, and Cassie finds out the location of the bachelor party. She shows up dressed as a raunchy stripper/nurse. Obviously I notice these things, and I found it curious that Cassie removed her perfectly good gym shoes and walked in white stocking feet over a lot of really rough terrain, but Sissi suggested she left the shoes as “breadcrumbs” in case something happened to her. Cassie slips on a pair of tall stiletto heels some of you might like before knocking and entering the house, but the whole barefoot stroll over the rocks really ratcheted up the excitement for me.
Once inside, she slips a Mickey or something into the vodka bottle she passes around to all of the party animals, except for Alexander Madison, the perp. Cassie lures Al to an upstairs bedroom, handcuffs him to the bed as an apparent prelude to a sex game, then pulls out a scalpel and announces her intention to mutilate him with it.
Somehow, one of Alex’s hands gets free. There is a struggle, but he manages to get a pillow over her face and suffocates her to death. The scene was pretty good, with her hands beating on his shoulder, making fists and her constant muffled screaming. What I liked was seeing the soles of her dirty feet kicking around. Finally, Al climbs on top of her face and uses his knee to finish her off. It is really intense. When she is finally still, the camera fixes on her soles for about 20 seconds, a shot that would have been perfect if her stockings had been shredded or torn completely from walking the path to the house earlier on. The director obviously did not care about making that happen for me, but you could still make out the outline of her soles and toe bed even with the hose on. it was still pretty hot.
The movie does not end there and I won’t reveal the rest. But I love it when the lead female is killed in the movies. And while suffocation is not my primary fetish, it wad a really good scene, in my estimation.
