Ms. carrera could/should if Hollywood was not so incredibly tone deaf have been one of the great villainesses of the screen. She has the ability to project an image of a beuatiful and intelligent but deeply flawed and sometimes (briefly in the Bond bomb 'Never Say Never') as a brutally evil human being. She would have been ideal for a remake of 'Double Indemnity' or as one of a couple of the women in the 'Black Dahlia'. Unfortunately she was typecast as a beautiful bimbo and found the tide to strong to swim against and found marrying very rich men to be a more pleasant and profitable path. To bad. Get a copy of ITJ and carefully watch carrera's mannerisms when she is on camera. Even in the final scence see how you can see her decide on the course of action she will follow when Hammer fairly jams the proof of her multiple homicides in her face. See her go from cool and flirtacious to being a sex tigeress to distract Hammer, if she can. Then watch her final moments as her life leaves her body. (Now that part should have been longer for real dramatic impact). It is pure incadescent sensuality and raw sexuality defined.

Yes, but La carrera is more than a hot babe. She has that indefinable but rare capacity for 'screen presence' in that she can project a character that engages and draws the viewer in. I know that because of her numerous third rate films and her two Playboy appearances she is mostly relegated to the bimbo limbo of Hollywood. However, i have spent time watching her in even some fairly bad films and am convinced she is a natural actress with a real personality. Far more impressive than say Sharon Stone who basically built her career on immaculate sensuality and strategic sexual alliances with older powerful production types. I think that Barbara Carrera even now (65 yrs old) could be a fascinating screen villainess and still reflect a sort of dark and knowing sexuality that would make her character memorable. However, hollywood is not into any sunstantive projects. It can make plenty of money off the fluff it cranks out.

Although Barbara Carrera is one of my favorite actresses, the 1982 remake of I, the Jury was one of the biggest cinematic disappointments I can recall. The director and writers deviated substantially from the original story and utterly ruined the ending when Mike Hammer finally confronted the evil Charlotte. I'm sure Ms. Carrera would have been willing to do the final scene as originally written, and the production would have been much more memorable if she had.

My take on the disappointing aspects of the final scene in ITJ was haste in completing what was a very under capitalized film by a tin eared director. As you note Carrera had no problem with appearing completely nude before the camera as her two Playboy layouts show very conclusively. The movie was a major disappointment because, as you correctly say, there was so much deviation from the originl novel. In the first instance the character of Hammer is diluted in the film until the Assante version is no more than a cocky wiseguy more characteristic of many of the third tier thugs and musclemen in the Godfather trilogy . The sort of guys that getting a load of buckshot fired into them on some road in north Jersey. Hammer in the novel, and I have to say to some degree in the Biff Elliot rendition in the 1953 film, is a seriously disturbed man. This is 1947 and Hammer, like a lot of vets, had seen to much combat and had a bad case of what is now termed PTSD. The character of Hammer in the first Spillane book is really frightening. The man hears grinding gear noises in his head, he is tormented by blind rage attacks. Disagreements in bar rooms turn into excuses to brutally beat other men, breaking bones in their face and reducing the premises to a ruin. Spillane never left the US during the war. His excellent shooters eye kept him a marksmanship instructor and rangemaster, teaching others the techniques of killing that he was never to employ. I suspect this ate at him his entire life and this subliminal rage was something he could tap into for the character of Hammer. Spillane, I am pretty sure knew a lot of combat vets and could observe their combat stress mannerisms.

Barbara Carrera carries her character off even with the total lack of buildup in the relationship between the two protagonists. She is more beliveable as Dr. Manning than the blonde inguene that Spillane decribes. Carrera is the right age and she carries her self with the world weary, sophisticated self assurance of someone like Dr. Manning.
Why the writers and directors chopped up the rest of the plot is beyond me. Even the largely flat sound stage 1953 version hewed to the original plot for more of the film than the '83 version. The character of Kalecky in the '83 version is just absurd. I think the film was made on the fly and that the hacks doing it just made it up each day. It was mostly shot in Germany with a few exteriors in New York City to give it a fig leaf of authenticity and i think that's how Carrera ended up as Dr. Manning. She was living in Europe with rich husband #1, a German industrialist ,and some one offered her a nice pile of dollars to make this quicky film. Pretty much her history as an actress. Picking up sex bomb leads to shed glamor on some sclock meister quicky film.

I think that a big part of the understated way the film ends has to do withnot wanting to spend the time or money to shoot two endings. There was a serious concern tfrom the start, that the film would get the dreaded 'X' rating for US distribution which would kill it in most theaters. The earlier sequence where Carrera does strip to invite Hammer into her bed posed no problems as it could easily be excised for US distribution. I am certain I didn't see that minute or so when I saw the theater version in 1983. I am sure I would have remembered Carrera showing her bush to all the world. Ditto the few seconds where Carrera or whoever, but I thin it is her, engage in the Alligator death roll sex sequence. Can't imagine I wouln't have remembered that. But if La Carrera perfomed the famed Charlotte Manning strip that wiould definately get it an 'x' rating, especially as the finale would be shooting a buck naked voluptuous beauty dead. So two endings would be required. One with a naked Carrera getting the lead kiss in her belly for European and Oriental release and a second with a half dressed Carrera getting iced. So just one with a half naked Carrera was rushed trough. Even then just a little fine tuning could have made it so much better. A quick cut to a backing shot showing Hammer pulling out his piece and placing it a couple inches from her naked belly as the two have that Tiger's kiss they engage in and then seeing the flash of the pistol as the slug rips into her guts would have been 100% better. As it is Carrera and Assante do generate a good bit of elemental tension and heat leading up to his .45 intercoursing of her. The bit where she can't stand up and Hammer lets her hit the floor like a piece of trash is really evocative of the Spillane version. Carrera does a nice job showing her very nice breasts as she hits the floor and they jiggle nicely. In general her last seconds on film do display the nexus of sex, pain, and death that is at the core of Spillane's (for many, not me) disturbing vision.

According to Cinemorge, Catherine Zeta Jones ,died by drowning in The Return of the Native. I would cettainly like to see her in more death scenes.

Also, I think that Shirley Ann Field had a sexy death in Horrors Of The Black Museum, when she was stabbed in the chest by her boyfriend ,as they exit the Tunnel of Love. There is a great shot of her body slumping half in and half out of the boat.

Very good never realised they killed her. I did of course know the equally sexy Eva Mendes gets blown away in that movie. Man she was hot back then when she had the curves,to skinny now,at least she gave us a great death scene when she was at her pick of hotness,total waste of hot ass but one hell of a fantasy to see her die.
