The Black Swan- Review and Spoiler

Post by kevin67 »

One would not figure that this movie qualifies for a review on FF, but there is a stabbing scene (not exactly a death scene ).

There has been little to nothing in the past few months in the main stream movies that would stimulate any of our death fetishes.

The Plot- The art director of a ballet company, played by Vincent Cassels, is looking for a new face to become his prima ballerina, since his present one (Winona Ryder) is retiring.

The directors plan is to do a rendition of Swan Lake where one ballerina plays both the white and black swan. He chooses Nina (Natalie Portman) , a young and somewhat innocent ,timid and high strung member of the ballet company for his new prima ballerina.

Nina still lives with her mother, a roomful of stuffed toys and goes to sleep with a ballerina music box. The mother of course over indulges her affection for her daughter.

The art director sees Nina as the perfect choice for the white swan, but feels he has to bring out her darker side to play the black swan. He even tries kissing her and later in the movie fondles he rin an attempt to bring this out in her.

Ninas difficulty in trying to get the role down correctly, and her love of ballet, is complicated by a new comer called Lilly (a madnificent Mila Kunis) ,who eventually becomes her understudy for the role of the black swan. In addition, they develop a weird relationship that ends in sex.

Nina drifts further and further into her hallucinations and eventually it culminates in her giving the best performance of her life as she morphs into the chatracter of the black swan. At the end of the ballet the white swan leaps to her death by falling onto a mattress hidden below the eyes of the audience.

It is interesting to note that Portman does some of the dancing in the movie ands gives the best acting performance of her career. She does more acting with her facial expressions, than any other performer I have seen this year. The rest of the cast does equally well.

Woman will love this movie, but the male population should find it interesting and not be bored with it. The audience seem to be almost half male and half female.

Death Fetish Content- The stabbing occurs at the end when Nina goes to her dressing room. She finds Lily there clad in the black swan outfit (naturally a tutu). Lily announces that she is playing the black swan. A fight ensues and Nina stabs Lily in the waist or a little lower with a shard of mirror glass that was broken during the fight.. Nina panics and drags Lily's body into the bathroom. The stabbing is too fast to actually see anythingsand the body pan is far too quick and the outfit is black , hiding the blood.

After she completes her makeup, there is a knock on the door and Lily sticks her head in to compliment her on her performance. It is obvious that Lily was not stabbed at all. When Lily leaves, Nina looks down at her own waist and sees the shard of glass sticking out of her, which she immediately pulls out. Undaunted by all this she goes and completes her performance and leaps onto the mattress below her. The audience goes wild over her performance and only then do the performers on stage see the blood. There is a longer look at the stabbed Nina as she lays on the mattress , but here is no confirmation on whether she dies or not because the movie ends at this point.

Rating - The necro elements of the stabbing wouldn't get more than a 5, but the overall movie is definitely a 10. Natalie should definitely walk away with the oscar for best actress.
