That's right. Starting today, I'm using DVD-compatible MPEG-2 compression for my clips. I've re-edited over 20 scenes, and they're all online now.

Today, I had a couple of people point out a problem with my decision to switch to DVD-compatible MPEG-2. Apparently, I neglected to take disk space into consideration. Sure enough, even just the 20+ re-edits I did already ate up just over a GB of drive space. Compare that to over 300 strangling scenes alone, in WMV format, taking up just under 3 GB, and you can imagine my how completely stupid I feel right now.

Thankfully, I hadn't removed the original WMV's for the scenes I re-edited, so I've changed all of the links back to their original files.

That would still give you about 80 clips on your average 4gb dvd, which isn't bad! That's about how many I had on each of my compilation disks when I copied things from tv or other disks...

Fact is, not everyone likes to burn clips to DVD - I've never been inclined to in the 11 years I've been doing this - and 4GB is a lot of space for anyone to have to set aside on their hard drive for just 80 clips. The partition I keep my clips stored on is 27GB, and I have nearly 600 clips taking up just 6 of that. I have no interest in re-arranging it until I start running out of room, and I don't expect that to happen for a long time.

It's all good. WMV is still a lot better than the MPEG-1 I used to use.

There are so many WMV formats that you should have no problem compressing your files to WMV in a format that is very near DVD in quality. The thing that most affects quality size is the frame size; next is the bit rate. These are adjustable with many compression programs. The resulting file size is only about 10% greater than MPEG 1

For my downloads (from video that was shot on SD DV tape), I've compromised on a 640X480 image size at a bit rate of 1500 - 2000 Kb/s DVD is only a 720X image size at a slightly higher bit rate (streaming rate).

For video shot in HD, I'm using either 640X, 720X, or 960X. The bitrate for that works out to be about 3300 Kb/s. The files are still smaller than MPEG2 because WMV is a variant of MPEG 4 which is a much higher compression.
